Proximity Living
Virtual E Waste Recycling System

Presently, our vast planetary systems operate in such a manner that objects often appear and disappear under inexplicable circumstances. We rely on the functionality of cars and trains, or delegate their repair to others. The objects we encounter in our daily lives are transported from distant lands, functioning until they inevitably cease to do so. Subsequently, these discarded items are transported discreetly in the early morning hours by odorous trucks to landfills and recycling centers. Conventionally, waste and its disposal have been expected to remain hidden from view.

However, let us now contemplate a prospective future, wherein waste management systems intertwine with residential architecture in close proximity to our dwellings. This vision parallels the way "human infrastructure is presently inseparable from the environment in the age of the Anthropocene". We shall reenvision our living spaces to incorporate, comprehend, and maintain these infrastructure systems. By doing so, we can remove pollution and waste from the concealed recesses and bring them within the very walls of our living rooms. This integration will entail strategic modifications, encompassing elements such as tanks housing plastic-consuming bacteria or fungi, facilities converting waste into biogas, carbon capture and sequestration technologies, wastewater treatment systems, industrial composting practices, or soil remediation techniques. These incremental changes can serve as a catalyst for transformative design, enabling us to effectuate comprehensive change within our cities.

The decentralized systems will be thought of in terms of their inputs and outputs to run, the design interventions introduced into the living space, and the data collection and system maintenance interface for the tenant and/or the building engineer. Each group will, through VR, design the interaction between system and user and in effect gamify the maintenance of these decentralized waste management nodes.
